7 Ways to Battle Acne Scarring

Each one of us has experienced acne. Some of us experienced it during puberty, some have dealt with it throughout their life on-an-off, and some have dealt with chronic acne their entire life. Acne, like any skin condition, is multifactorial meaning the development and persistence of acne depends on many factors. These factors include your skincare regimen, your diet, and your daily habits.

Once we find ways to defeat our acne, we are sometimes left with subtle reminders. Yup--those pesky acne scars and dark spots. Unfortunately, we are typically the culprit of such residual scarring. We usually develop acne scarring from—you know it---picking at our acne! We are either squeezing our bumps or trying to remove whiteheads and end up with seemingly long-term scarring. After we manipulate our skin so many times, it can be difficult to achieve an even skin tone.

The real issue is behind acne scarring and dark spots is fighting the urge to play with your acne. I have found that this urge is linked to my stress levels. When I am under stress, I do not follow my self-care routine or admirable dietary habits, which leads to breakouts. Yet, as my skin begins to reflect my poor habits or stress levels, I have the vague thought that “picking at this will make it better”. But trust me, the answer is always NO! I am not sure if anyone else must fight this urge but over the last two years or so I have tried to become more mindful about how I care for my skin and drop some habits that I realized were harming my skin. I wanted to share some of my tips with you all, so I compiled a list of habits that I use to reduce the occurrence of dark spots:

1.       When you have the urge to pick, put on a face mask—making your face inaccessible.

2.       Exfoliate your skin instead of picking at your skin—pick up helpful habits instead of damaging habits.

3.       If you pick under stress, then identify your stressor—attack the problem at the source so you do not end up attacking your skin.

4.       Ingest collagen—you can get collagen peptides from your local health food store and add them to your water, coffee, or tea.

5.       Increase your vitamin A intake—eat carrots, grapefruit, broccoli, and dark greens.

6.       Increase your omega-3 fatty acid intake—eat fish, soybeans, leafy greens, flaxseed, and walnuts.

7.       Incorporate turmeric into your skincare regimen—Loni’s Essential Honey & Turmeric soap and Turmeric Toner are easy ways to add turmeric to your regimen.
